Chapter Eleven

On Thursday, I was doing a school-age group, talking about Colonial Christmases, when I saw Mrs. Conner walk in carrying a stack of books. After dumping them in the return bin, she headed to the new book section. I hoped she’d take her time, because she was an ideal person to talk about Carl and Alice.

I finished the group, cleaned up our mess, and then made my way to Mrs. Conner. “Good afternoon. Are you finding what you want?”

“Oh Sophie. How are you?” She put the new large print book from J.D. Robb back on the shelf.

“Oh, I’m okay. I’m a little worried about my aunt,” I said mostly to get her attention.

“Rose? Is something wrong?” She turned her attention to me.

“Carl’s death hasn’t been easy.”

She shook her head. “I heard the sheriff’s office was questioning her. I told them I couldn’t imagine Rose poisoning Carl. Personally, I think they were always flirting.”

I was sure Aunt Rose didn’t see it like that, but I didn’t contradict Mrs. Conner. “Have they talked to you too?”

“Oh yes. I think they’re talking to everyone.” She went back to looking at the books on the shelf.

“I guess so. I’m told there were many people who didn’t like Carl. I was surprised because he was always seemed so happy and dapper.”

“Hmmm . . . well looks can be deceiving.” She pulled out a reprint of an Agatha Christie book.

“So, I’ve heard.”

“Are you getting involved again?” she asked, pushing the Christie book back to its place and instead, pulling out a new release from Joanne Fluke.

“No. My sleuthing days are over,” I lied. “Although I’d sure like to clear Aunt Rose. Would you have any information that could help me?”

“No,” she said, pushing the Fluke book back onto the shelf. “Some of these are so violent.”

“The Agatha Christie and Joanne Fluke ones aren’t,” I said.

“I’m looking for a mystery with some humor. Do you have any recommendations?”

“Murder and humor?” How did one make murder funny?

“Have you read Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plumb series. It’s humorous.”

“I’ve heard of that. Do you have her books?”

“All twenty-something of them.” I led her to the fiction section where all her books were shelved. “This is the first one.” I handed her One for the Money.

“Thank you, Sophie.” She smiled at me. “I’m so glad you left the Booty Burgo and landed here.”

“Me too.” I wished I could think of another question to ask her that might help me, but I couldn’t come up with one that didn’t reveal me as a liar about my sleuthing for Aunt Rose. “Is there anything else?”

“I’m just going to look around some more.”

“Okay. Let me know if have questions.” I turned and started back to the front desk.

“Oh, Sophie. You know, I was thinking about any information I might have.”

Yes! I plastered on an even expression to hide my hope that this was the proverbial smoking gun info. “Oh?”

“Well, this could be nothing, but Alice did try to bribe Carl before the contest.”

“Really?”

Mrs. Conner waved her hand.
